PRESS RELEASE: Kansas City Area Mayors Support Supreme Court Justices for Retention

JOHNSON, WYANDOTTE, LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, KS — A bipartisan coalition of Johnson and Wyandotte County mayors support the retention of all five justices to the Kansas Supreme Court. The justices whose names will appear on the 2016 General Election ballot are: Chief Justice Lawton Nuss and Associate Justices Carol Beier, Dan Biles, Marla Luckert and Caleb Stegall.

They also also support the retention of the Kansas Court of Appeals judges who are from the Johnson County, Wyandotte County and Lawrence area: Karen Arnold-Burger, Steven Leben, Joseph Pierron, David Bruns and G. Gordon Atcheson.

The mayors released the following joint statement:

"As current and former mayors in Johnson and Wyandotte County, we join other leaders of our state in supporting the retention of our Kansas Supreme Court justices and the Court of Appeals judges because maintaining fair and impartial courts that are free of political interference is critical for the long-term success of our communities.

Our courts play a critical role in protecting the rights of local governments, businesses and citizens. We support a judicial system in Kansas that is free of political interference so our courts can continue to make rulings based on the constitution and the rule of law. We also believe that having three strong branches of government provides an essential system of checks and balances against government overreach into the lives of all Kansans and allows us to maintain local control.

It is critical that the highest court in the state remain fair and impartial. As Kansans begin to cast their votes, we urge them to complete the ballot and vote YES for each Supreme Court justice and our Court of Appeals judges."

The mayors that signed on to the statement are: Mike Boehm, Lenexa; David Breuer, Basehor; Peggy Dunn, Leawood; Carl Gerlach, Overland Park; Joel Marquardt, Roeland Park; Paula Schwach, Westwood Hills; Robert Tietze, Mission Woods; Laura Wassmer, Prairie Village; Jerry Wiley, Fairway. The former mayors are: Ed Eilert, Overland Park and current Chairman of the Johnson County Board of Commissioners; Carol Marinovich, Unified Government of Wyandotte County; Laura McConwell, Mission; Lori Hirons, Roeland Park.

Launched in 2013, Kansans for Fair Courts is a nonpartisan coalition of thousands of Kansans who are working to ensure fair and impartial courts for all Kansans and advocate for the importance of the merit selection system. This year, KFFC is working to defend and retain the members of the Kansas Supreme Court and Kansas Court of Appeals who have been targeted by political groups for defeat.

Kansans for Fair Courts is an initiative of the Kansas Values Institute. For more information, please visit: www.KansansForFairCourts.org.
